Rare Breed Status with RBST

The Rare Breeds Survival Trust Equine Watch List places the Fell pony in its middle category, "At Risk". The page gives statistics from FAnGR, and charts breeding results (UK) for the last 7 years.

Global population

The Society can only estimate, on the basis of an average pony life span, that the living global population of registered Fell ponies is currently under 7,300.

To be precise, in the 25 years 2001-2025
8,067 foals were born and registered, and
735 deaths were reported of animals born in those years.
(source, FPS stud book records on the Grassroots database, October 2026).
However, owners do not always return passports to the FPS to record a pony's death although it is a legal responsibility to do so, and a few ponies do live to greater ages than 25 years, so 7,300 can only be an estimate.

I'd like to register a prefix for ponies I breed.  How can I find out if the name I am considering is already in use?

The Central Prefix Registry is the organization that maintains the list of prefixes.  You can visit their web site and use their search facility to ascertain the current availability of the name you would like to use.
