Artificial Insemination Regulations

The Fell Pony Society would like to draw your attention to it's regulations on the registration of foals bred by Artificial Insemination (AI).  It is crucial that people using or considering using this method of breeding comply fully with the Regulations.  Unfortunately failure to do so may well result in you not being able to register your foals in the Stud Book.

The following is a precis of the full Regulations:
It is strongly recommended that if using or considering using AI that you read the full Regulations (copies available from the main office please send a stamped addressed envelope for their return).

  1. Stallion and mare owners must be members of the Society or Daughter Society
  2. Stallions must be registered, licensed and blood typed/DNA tested in line with FPS Regulations.
  3. Mares must be registered and DNA tested prior to insemination.
  4. The stallion will be issued with a yearly permit from the Society at a prescribed fee (currently £25). The Society has the right to rescind that permit where necessary at any time. There will be a limit of 30 pregnancies per stallion per annum: 15 from domestic foal registrations and 15 from overseas foal registrations.
  5. The stallion owner participating in an AI program must notify the Society of semen sold, to whom, and any subsequent sales within 28 days.
  6. The following forms must be completed:
Form A - Certificate of Semen collected
            Form B - Insemination Certificate
Form C - Confirmation of Pregnancy Certificate.

Note: All these forms must be signed by a vet and stamped with the practice address.

7a. Form A must be completed by a vet and accompanies the semen to the Equitainer.
7b. Forms B & C are handed to the mare owner for completion by a vet.
7c. Forms A, B & C must accompany application to register foals with the Fell Pony Society.

8. The resulting foal must be DNA tested between 3 - 6 months of age.

All forms may be obtained form the Fell Pony Society main office.
